Alvarado Row, one of the first residential streets on the Stanford campus, it was named for Juan Bautista Alvarado who was governor of Alta California from 1836 to 1842. His grandfather, also Juan Bautista Alvarado, was a member of the 1769 Portola expedition. Originally named Alvarado Avenue by David Starr Jordan, he changed avenue to row because a row of pattern-book houses was built there. House numbers start at 576 (Alvarado Row and Alvarado Court).

Birch Street was also treated the same way and met with Second Street in Mayfield.
