27th Presentation
Preservation awards were announced during a joint program with PAHA (Palo Alto Historical Association) on May 7, 2023 to two worthy projects. The afternoon's program featured architect Dan Garber, FAIA, partner at Fergus Garber Architects. His topic was Birge Clark, — The Early Years, His Time and Influences: 1922–1933. Historian Steve Staiger explained the processes involved in identifying centennial structures while a slide show of identified 1922 structures was shown.

The architectural team strived to preserve the spirit of the original Birge Clark design while enhancing its personality with the Graduate brand. Renovation of the building featured numerous upgrades: seismic structural retrofit; restoration of the historic central stairway; reconfiguration of former apartments back to hotel rooms; restoration of the historic elevator; addition of an iconic building sign at the corner of University Avenue and Cowper Street; and a publicly accessible rooftop with views of Palo Alto.
